England Scotland Tour – 3/19 The Last Day

Starting with the 4th game in 7 days against Preston Lodge Rugby Club, about 30 mins east of Edinburgh. A small club with their clubhouse in the local pub, Preston Lodge put up a good fight and managed to get a few tries in against our by now very tired team. They hosted us for lunch, a very interesting lasagne/hot dog cross which tasted wonderfull but came as a bit of a surprise and then rush back to the coach to get to Murrayfield for the Scotland-Italy game.

An amazing atmosphere followed by a strong Scottish win left us in great spirits for the long walk back through Edinburgh to the hostel for dinner, packing up and the 1am

, coach ride to Newcastle.

England Scotland Tour 3/18

An easy day for the boys with no game or practice.

In the morning the boys went to Murrayfield, the home of Scottish rugby, to see the Scotland team practice the day before their final game in the Six Nations Championship. At the end of the training session the whole team came across and spent several minutes with the boys, asking about the tour and how it was going as well as signing balls, shirts, jackets and anything else on display.

Joe nervously asked is he could pass a ball to the Scotland number 9. A minute later he is out on the centre field of the stadium playing ball – a fabulous experience for everyone.

With an afternoon at paintball, most adult support mysteriously evaporated but the guns were out and fun was had. An evening off for the boys and the President also managed to imbibe just a little of Scotlands famous liquid gold, in front of the fireplace in a 400year old distillery building.

England – Scotland Tour 3/17

A drive from Newcastles north across the border and in to Scotland. A quick stop at the first woollen mill and we managed to get coach Tibby to exchange at a 10% commision rate from English to Scottish pounds.

Lunch in Kelso, a small Scottish border town was followed by a lesson in curling with current British Commonwealth Gold Medal Winners. Throwing big granite rocks on an ice rink produced sights which I am sure had never been seen on a curling rink before and will likely never be repeated. We even found some geniune skills showing through at the end of the afternoon.

On to Hawick and a game against perhaps the most famous Borders rugby Club in history. Hawick RFC put together a select XV from the Hawick Wanderes and Hawick PSA teams. This was a first in the club’s 137 year history. The teams are normally arch rivals and were held to no score for 16 minutes but eventually played us to 29-10 loss. Against 3 Scotland U18 Internationals and a well drilled team we were happy with the result. Hawick gratiously said that if we had played the teams separately the results may have been differant.

A later tour of their club house highlighted some of their great victories and we also managed a veiwing of the private “Bill McLaren Room”. A tribute to perhaps one of the most famous commentators

in British Rugby.

England – Scotland Tour 3/16

A great start to the day following Kevin Coster and Morgan Freeman to the famous Sycamore Tree on Hadrians Wall (see Robin Hood movie). The wall dates back to 122AD and along with the Roman Garrison was quite  an experience.

In the afternoon we faced Newcastle Royal Grammar School Rugby team. RGS is a famous rugby school and has produced many international players. Last year they went to the payoffs for the National Championships at Twickenham. We played a second team which had been significantly strengthened by half a dozen of the first XV.

First win of the tour to Woodlands Rugby with a very closely fought result at 7-0. Reid Romero’s try after 18 minutes was converted by Ryan”Iceman” Tozzi. RGS was completely overwhelmed by our defense and couldn’t come back.

England Scotland Tour 3-15

Great day starting with professsional coaching by Stephen Bates ex-Wasps and England player and former Newcastle Falcons Director of rugby. The boys received high performance coaching and skills direction from a world class international rugby coach both morning and afternoon split by warm hosting and a great lunch by Tynedale Rugby Club.

A shower and off to Featherstone Castle owned by John Featherstone who has dedicated 35 years developing and promoting Tynedale Rugby into top tier club status in the Northeast. Mr Featherstone spent the evening showing us around his

great castle, describing the history and stories of these grounds dating back to 1000 AD. Hosting dinner, dessert and a chilling ghost story to top off an evening none will forget.
